Academic Departments

HVRHS takes pride in the leadership and educational talents of each of our departments.

Agricultural Ed

Agriculture Science and Technology classes provide education and hands-on training, in agricultural engineering, biotechnology, natural resources, plus animal, food, and plant science. 

Art

Classes are available in art history, color and design, computer animation, digital design, drawing, painting photography, sculpture, and telling visual storytelling. Exploration is encouraged.

Athletics

Housatonic has a long, storied tradition of athletic success. The program fosters success on the playing field, in the classroom, and in students’ careers.  All are encouraged to participate.

English

Our four-year English program follows a standards-referenced curriculum developed in alignment with the Common Core State Standards to instill an appreciation for language.

Health & Phys Ed

Physical exercise is a key component in our curriculum and is crucial for every day mental well-being. All students are required to take a marking period of health yearly.

Mathematics

Math is to learning what endurance and strength training is to sports: it provides students with the building blocks for solving problems and thinking logically.

Music

Music courses include sessions in band, chorus, music theory and music technology.  Recording studios offer students the opportunity to develop their own music.

Science

Science courses include biology, chemistry, forensics, earth science, physics, environmental classes, engineering design, coding and Marine Biology

Social Studies

Social studies classes strive to prepare students to be global citizens. Courses focuses on the common strands of history from the earliest human civilizations to current times.

Special Education

The Special Education department at HVRHS offers a number of different programs and services.

 

Tech Ed

Courses include black and white photography, computer aided drafting (CAD) and Electronic Publishing, metal technology, production graphics, wood working.

World Languages

Language is the fundamental building block of every society.  What we know and understand determines how we view the world. Our French and Spanish classes broaden horizons.

Capstone Projects

Culminating assignments that help develop research, analysis, and summary skills. Click and scroll to page 26.
